about 300 A.D. His flesh was torn with iron combs before being beheaded.
He became the patron saint of the wool combers, his effigy being carried
at the head of their processions each saint's day. |

on a very thick planchet. A marvelous network of spidery die cracks grace
the reverse and the workmanship on the edge is unique and superbly done
for additional interest. Ex-Noble sale Lot 843. This piece is one of the
finest known of the 48 struck. Thomas Gye made a considerable sum of money
as an investor which he used to build the Thomas Guy's hospital in London.
He died in 1725 at the age of 80 shortly before his hospital was opened. |

were considered sacred to the Druids. When a plant was found, it was
approached with reverance, usually,when the moon was six days old. The
mistletoe was cut with a golden hook and used in a religious ceremony, its
extract thought to be an antidote to poison and sterility. |
