Joel Spingarn Collection of 18th Century Token

Greetings There comes a time, for all collectors, when the sensible thing to do is to distribute his or her collection to the next caretakers. At age 80, I believe that time has come for me. There is no doubt in my mind that I have chosen and enjoyed collecting what I consider to be one of the most interesting series of numismatics Collecting material that is more than two hundred years old, in pristene condition, at an affordable level, is a collectors dream. I have endeavored to collect the finest specimens obtainable and have often graded up from a lesser piece. As a result, the overall quality of this collection is far above average.

I decided to issue this "fixed price" list rather than go the auction route because, in my opinion, it is fairer to both the buyers and the seller. Auctions are exciting but often the buyers overpay and frequently the seller gets shorted.

A good deal of attention has been paid to grading and accurately describing, in plain language, the condition of the pieces. You will notice that some "one-liners" have been included with the descriptions, just to add a bit of interest. I now realize why most cataloguers use black and white photographs. Unfortunately the color photos do not portray the tokens accurately. Full red pieces show up as a red-brown and those with beautiful reflective surfaces do not show the subtle shades of red, blue and gold .

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation to the dealers Spink, Baldwin, Allan and Marnie Davisson, Jerry and Sharon Bobbe, Bill McKivor, Frank VanVallen, Jim Noble, Phil Flanagan, Paul Bosco, Bill Seese, Steve Tannenbaum Jim King, and to fellow collectors Allen Bennett, Robinson Brown, Michael Balwierczak, Harold Welch and posthumously to Wayne Anderson with whom I shared the enjoyment and thrill of new acquisitions. Thank you all.

Please do not consider this a "good bye". I have every intention of continuing my membership in the C.T.C.C and hopefully continuing as membership chairman.
